Little Big Adventure

Little Big Adventure
Remake

How it all started

From the first moment of me played Little Big Adventure I became the big fan of the series. Little Big Adventure 2 just grounded my love forever. Sadly time is not very generous to most of the old games. They once played and beloved slowly fade into past and becoming forgotten replaced by newer better looking games. Sadly L.B.A. is one games that didn't escaped this fate. This days only small group of most hard core fans hiding at magicball.net left but even this last bastion slowly disappearing and new generation of players very often didn't even heard about Little Big Adventure.

November 2010

At that time there was no information about any official re-release, remake, remastered version. Little Big Adventure 3 was just fairy tail which existed for years and even at that point people were loosing hope that it will ever happen. Because of that I decided to make remake of first game. First attempts were pretty rough but I was and still am proud of them anyway. They are foundation for project you can see right now.

Official remastered version and concerns

I really respect all rights of original authors and owners of franchise that is why I never claimed that I have any rights to characters, game play, universe or anything like that. I do it for fun in my free time. Sadly when there were released first information about re-releasing Little Big Adventure 1 and 2 on gog.com and official remake I started to be a little bit concern about future of my work. I decide to reach to Frédérick Raynal with question if I can work on remake which contain one maybe two first islands.

In meantime of waiting for answer I decided to temporary stop development. But answer came:

" Don't worry you can continue your work. "

This was great news thanks to which I could resume work without any worries.

Five years later (Year 2015)

Five years passed from begin of development. Some may say that this is long time but also a lot happened in it. We already had few nice development videos showing how game changed. Game play slowly but steady is moving forward. Engine transformed a lot to follow my ambitious plans. There was almost nothing to complain. But ...

Generally I don't think about myself as sane person. If I was one I wouldn't probably do this project :] But well crazy people do crazy stuff and I decided to do one of it again. Around June 2015 I decided to reset project. This time with a lot more changes comparing to original game.

Nine years later (Year 2019)

Nine years passed and just verified that even less sane than I thought: year ago I scratched whole content of game and do final iteration over it. This time there is no going back. I plan to be bold and crazy with what I do with the remake. I want to create high level entertainment for new and old players of franchise. Look forward to new content because I think it is awesome.

Never really alone

For long time I claimed that I do project alone. But it's never was exactly like that. I always were supported by a lot of people. Some of theme were giving me advice other listened to my boring stories what I will not to do in project. Other were just there to go for drink when I needed some break. There were also people who shared some of their time to do texture or art for me. I had also occasion to cooperate with some great people over the time but in the end this didn't lasted. With new iteration of game I once again one man team and don't plan to change that.

What next ?

This is interesting part and to say truth I still don't know :D Stay with the project and see what will happen with it.

FAQ:

  • When we will release finished game ?
We don't know. There is still a lot to do but when we will know we will for sure announce it.

  • Why we don't gave access to game it will be freeware anyway ?
Because game is developed on custom technology it change very often. Some changes breaking stuff some other are buggy and some introduce proof of concepts for some systems. Generally at this point it would be problematic for us to support bigger group of people without sacrificing our development time. But we think about open beta in which everybody will be able to test game.

  • Why you don't want my money ?
There were ideas from fans to create Kickstarter campaign or gather donations. Personally I don't think that this would be fair with owners of original game rights. And because of that we don't plan any movement in this direction.
  • Are you doing any remastering of the original LBA soundtrack by Phil Vachey?
No we don't. Original soundtrack is great but like game it's under copyrights law. In case of game we got permission in case of music we didn't asked.

From good news: Jesse Gorter have plans to create alternative soundtrack for Little Big Adventure. It may end as part of this remake but we will see what he will decide.
  • Who creating game ?
    Right now on game work:
    • Greg Wojciechowski  - Everything and a little bit more.
  • What technology we use?
Game use my White Rabbit Engine that is developed for Windows and Linux. It is based on SDL, OpenGL, Bullet, Lua, Recast and OpenAL.

  • What tools we use to create game ?
We use custom editor to create maps, Blender 2.80 for modeling, MyPaint for sketches, Gimp for textures and arts, Audacity for creating sounds, Substance for textures and models painting.

  • Will we share editor with game ?
We think about it but we still didn't decided.

  13. Though, as for myself if I may, I'd envisioned the remake in more cartoonish Nintendoish style.
